uptrend, the ABT Sportsline lifestyle mag, in its 01/2014 issue has the special touch. Initially, the diabolical title featuring the RS6-R only showed its rough outline. But since it consists of thermal paper, a pair of warm hands suffices to make the 730hp car appear in full. This fast estate aside, uptrend also features the other new ABTs presented in Geneva, with the Swiss city also worth an extensive portrait, by the way.

Crossover alternatives to compact rockets like a Golf R or Audi S3 had been a rarity until in 2013 the racy Audi RS Q3 with its 310 hp/228 kW was rolled out. The ABT Sportsline engineers then saw even more potential in this chic car and wanted to put it on an equal footing with real sports cars. Extensive tests on their own dynamometer and public roads followed and showed that the 2.5l five-cylinder engine would easily bear a permanent 32 % uprating, provided the engineers were careful. Now, the ABT RS Q3 has 410 hp or 301 kW; the maximum torque is 530 Nm, up from a serial 420 Nm. In Geneva, ABT will present the power-SUV in an “innocent” white shade with an impressive decor which will then make this colour lose its innocence right away.

When you read 730 hp/537 kW, you may first think of an Italian super-sports-car or a big truck but not of a roadworthy family or business estate. But ABT Sportsline is still able to surprise its target group and at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 will present its latest Audi RS6 model, the 320 kph ABT RS6-R. “Mind you, the R stands for racy, not for rough or rude,” says CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt: “As with the normal Audi RS6, ours also provides the utmost comfort, sumptuousness and usefulness, limited to 25 cars worldwide.“

It all started 117 years ago with a revolutionary idea: Johann Abt, a blacksmith, developed a device that allowed horse-drawn carriages to be used in Bavarian winters as well. That made for savings and the growth of the young company. In short order, Abt also dealt with automobiles. The company’s connection with the four brands that today are epitomised by Audi’s famous four rings started as early as shortly after the First World War. Here in Essen, three highlights of this ongoing relationship are now being presented – the ABT RS5-R, ABT Golf VII GTI Dark Edition and ABT Polo R WRC to be precise. The Kempten-based company provides innovative solutions for quite a number of models produced by the Volkswagen Group. All the cars and all the components are always state-of-the-art and, needless to say, imbued with the successful and traditional family-owned company’s spirit. And it goes without saying that they are always based upon more than five decades of experience gained in premium motorsports. Over the past decade, these comprised five DTM (German Touring Masters) championships, among others.

A lot of manufacturers refers to motor sports when marketing sporty large-scale production cars. But one should always beware. After all, stickers and alloy wheels alone do not make for a real racer. ABT Sportsline, however, takes a more challenging approach, and visitors to the Essen Motor Show will be able to see it at Booth A155 in Hall 3.0 when checking out the RS5-R. The Audi it is based upon is one of the company’s best to begin with, but the Bavarian tuners have been able to tune this too.
