Maiden win for Audi Sport Italia’s R8 LMS ultra in the Italian Gran Turismo opener

  • Andrea Sonvico and Christian Montanari clinch clean win in Vallelunga Race 1 and podium finish in Race 2; Davide Di Benedetto and Alex Frassineti post Race 1 Top3 finish

2012 Italian Gran Turismo season kick-off had a pretty good load of new things in store for Audi Sport Italia. The drivers’ line-up underwent a major overhaul, as in Vallelunga the lone familiar face was 2011 runner-up Andrea Sonvico. He was splitting his time in the seat of the brand-new R8 LMS ultra with Christian Montanari. The other car was handed over to Davide Di Benedetto and Alex Frassineti. All of them had to make acquaintance with their new weapons on Friday at the Piero Taruffi circuit, as the completion of the cars upgrade had been carried out a few hours before the team trucks headed south to Rome.

Audi R8 LMS Cup teaser video featuring Chinese star Aaron Kwok

The Audi R8 LMS Cup is set to start in less than a week in China. Here is a look into the upcoming action with Chinese celebrity Aaron Kwok who will be racing one of the R8s. Aaron Kwok will drive the No.88 black R8 LMS with red dragon pattern. He is very exciting to join the new series, and he is “very satisfied” with the R8 LMS. Marc Gené is new reserve driver at Audi Sport

  • 2009 Le Mans winner augments Audi squad
  • Spaniard brings sports car victories and Formula 1 experience to the team
  • Timo Bernhard’s recovery is progressing

Ingolstadt, April 17, 2012 – Audi is reinforcing its sports car line-up with another driver. The Spaniard Marc Gené will be available to Audi as a reserve driver, standing in for Timo Bernhard in the Audi R18 ultra as early as at the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Spa-Francorchamps on May 5.
 
This year, Audi again decided to sign a reserve driver for the Le Mans 24 Hours. Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich selected Marc Gené for this role, a very experienced sports car racer who brings long-standing Formula 1 experience to the team as well. The 38-year-old Spaniard has been under contract as a test or race driver with Formula 1 racing teams since 1999. He also contested the past five events of the Le Mans 24 Hours, clinching overall victory in 2009. After Timo Bernhard was injured in a testing accident that was no fault of his own in mid-March and is still recovering, Gené will be sharing the number “3” Audi R18 ultra with Romain Dumas (F) and Loïc Duval (F) at Spa.

R8 LMS ultra and R18 ultra testing in the rain at Monza Circuit

Audi was recently in Italy at a very rainy Monza Circuit testing The R18 ultra in preparation for it’s first International WEC race. The 6 Hours Of Spa−Francorchamps takes place on Saturday, May 5th and will be the debut race for the R18 ultra and the R18 e-tron quattro. Audi also brought along a new R8 LMS ultra to take part in the testing. The R8 LMS ultras have already taken part in a few races and have been very successful. It’s rare that we are able to the fearocious growl the R8s V10 on it’s own not surrounded by other racers.

Five weeks before the eagerly awaited DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring on April 29 Audi is making a colorful visual statement. At the first official DTM track tests at Valencia, four new Audi A5 DTM cars will be on track sporting their final outfits for the first time. The designs of the other four race cars plus the partners for the “title defense” project have been determined as well.
