The Audi R18 TDI pulls into the Simraceway Garage

The R18 TDI succeeded the R15 TDI as Audi ‘s Le Mans Prototype weapon-of-choice in 2010. It represented the first coupe design since the manufacturer’s failed experiment with the R8C over a decade before, in a move prompted by new laws that slowed down pit stop times and negated the main advantage of an open cockpit.

Podium for Audi at ILMC finale in China

  • Timo Bernhard/Marcel Fässler on position three at Zhuhai
  • Tom Kristensen/Allan McNish retired
  • One-two success for Audi R8 LMS in the GTC class

At the end of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) Audi Sport Team Joest achieved another podium result with the Le Mans winning Audi R18 TDI at the season finale in China. Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fässler finished the 6-hour race at Zhuhai in third place. Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen in the “sister car” were forced to retire due to a collision in which they were not at fault.

Audi on second row at ILMC finale

  • Tom Kristensen just 269 thousandths short of pole position at Zhuhai
  • Concentration on race set-up for the two Audi R18 TDI cars
  • Pole position for the Audi R8 LMS in the GTC class

The two Audi R18 TDI cars will tackle the finale of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) at Zhuhai (China) from the second row of the grid. Audi Sport Team Joest completely concentrated on the race set-up in qualifying.

Last year had already shown that the 4.317-kilometer race track at Zhuhai with its nine right- and five left-hand turns is particularly hard on the brakes and tires. Therefore, Audi systematically used the wet test day on Wednesday and the free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday to intensively work for the six-hour race – and with a positive interim result: both Audi R18 TDI cars left an extremely strong impression during long runs in practice.

In qualifying on Saturday Tom Kristensen (Denmark) and Marcel Fässler (Switzerland) took grid positions three and four for Audi in 27 degrees in the shade. The Le Mans record winner was merely 269 thousandths of a second short of the pole position.

Audi R18 TDI to compete in record market China

  • Finale of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) at Zhuhai
  • Record result for Audi in the world’s largest single market
  • Grand appearance also for the Audi R8 LMS

On November 13, at the close of a successful motorsport season, highlighted by the tenth triumph at the Le Mans 24 Hours and the title win in the DTM, Audi is contesting the 6-hour race at Zhuhai, China, the country that has meanwhile evolved into AUDI AG’s largest sales market.

As early as in the first week of October the brand with the four rings equaled the Chinese sales record from the entire year of 2010. In 2011, Audi expects sales to reach the level of more than 300,000 vehicles there for the first time. For Audi, the finale of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) at Zhuhai is thus a fitting occasion to celebrate the Chinese record.

Audi on front row at Silverstone

  • Allan McNish clinches P2 on the grid at his “home round”
  • Rain shower prevents faster lap times
  • Audi drivers optimistic for race on Sunday

The two Audi R18 TDI cars from Audi Sport Team Joest will start into the 6-hour race at Silverstone (Great Britain) on Sunday at 11:35 a.m., local time ( 12:35 CEST) from the two front rows of the grid.

Rain showers made conditions in qualifying on Saturday afternoon difficult. Drizzling rain had already set in before the beginning of the 20-minute session. But when the two Audi drivers, Allan McNish and Timo Bernhard, were on what were their fastest laps up to that time, they encountered heavier rain in the last track sector so that they were unable to improve their times any more.

Last European stop for the Audi R18 TDI

  • After the DTM the sports prototypes are visiting the UK as well
  • 6-hour race at Silverstone
  • Two Audi R18 TDI cars are battling for victory

The 6-hour race at Silverstone (Great Britain) marks the beginning of the final sprint for Audi in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) – the racing series that will become the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012.

Only one week after the DTM round at Brands Hatch the Audi sports car prototype squad is traveling to the United Kingdom: The fifth of seven ILMC rounds in 2011 is on the calendar at the Grand Prix circuit in Silverstone. Audi Sport Team Joest is again fielding two vehicles of the Le Mans winning Audi R18 TDI featuring ultra-lightweight technology that will be driven by Timo Bernhard and Marcel Fässler (car number “1”) and Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish (car number “2”).

With less than three weeks to go until the fifth race in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), Audi gave media representatives the opportunity to experience the excitement of the Silverstone track from the cockpit of a real race car.

Last Monday, Audi driver Allan McNish allowed journalists to see things from an unusual perspective, taking them round the 5.141-kilometer Silverstone course at racing speeds in the 520 hp Audi R8 LMS. No less than 20 journalists jumped at the opportunity, and all of them were thrilled to have been able to experience the cockpit of Audi’s GT3 customer sport race car. Audi will have two R18 TDI vehicles lining up for the fifth ILMC race at Silverstone on September 11.
