Team will contest 2012 Rolex Series season with first Audi R8 LMS in North America, beginning with 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona
November 23, 2011 (Opelika, AL) – APR Motorsport is proud to announce that it will become the first team to compete in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series with the Audi R8 LMS, when the team takes the green flag for January’s 50th Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 28, 2012 – and, hopefully, is first to the checkered flag on January 29.
Passion for the Audi brand runs deep at APR. Stephen Hooks, President and CEO of APR, was an aspiring driver and Audi enthusiast who raced Audis in the Motorola Cup – the predecessor to GRAND-AM. After leaving his driving ambitions to build APR into the largest aftermarket and motorsport company for Audis worldwide, Hooks returned to competition as a principal in APR Motorsport. The team was the first to race Audi’s newest and hottest sedan, the B8 model generation Audi S4, in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Being the first team to field the R8 LMS in North America is a natural progression for APR Motorsport.
The winning pedigree of APR Motorsport’s brand-new Audi R8 LMS, the first example built for the Rolex Series, is undoubtedly strong as well. Examples of the Audi R8 LMS have taken victory more than one hundred times in races in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. Now, APR’s customers – as well as Audi fans from Ingolstadt to Alabama – will cheer on the APR Audi R8 LMS as it seeks to add to the win tally.
Building upon experience gained in the CTSCC, APR Motorsport will now have the Rolex Series’ Grand Touring class looking over its shoulders with the series’ newest major contender, the Audi R8 LMS. Using the same team and infrastructure that has made the team a force to be reckoned with in the CTSCC, the team will now look to shake up the status quo of the Rolex Series – which has seen the series dominated by the same three manufacturers over the past several seasons.
The Audi R8 LMS, which is already a proven platform for success in GT racing the world over, will have the rest of the GT field looking over its shoulders. APR Motorsport also remains committed to discovering and developing the best driving talent found today in GRAND-AM.
Teams hoping that this will spell and end to APR Motorsport’s efforts in the CTSCC will be disappointed, as the team will continue its CTSCC program in 2012, with an exciting announcement about that program coming soon. APR Motorsport will make further announcements about drivers for the APR Audi R8 LMS, as well as marketing partners, in the coming weeks.
APR Motorsport’s Audi R8 LMS will make its on-track debut – dressed in the distinctive APR Motorsport livery – at the Roar Before the Rolex 24 test at Daytona International Raceway on January 6-8, 2012.
DTM Champion Martin Tomczyk seeks a new sporting challenge. The 29-year-old man from Rosenheim will no longer compete for Audi in the 2012 season.
“I won the Championship for Audi after eleven years together. The entire Audi Sport team and in particular Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich have always been behind me throughout the many years we spent together,” explains Martin Tomczyk. “I’m delighted that I could repay the trust by winning the 2011 championship title together with team Phoenix. Despite this joint success, and after careful consideration, I have now decided to accept a new challenge. To conclude, I would once again like to thank everybody with whom I have worked together during my eleven years at Audi Sport and assure every single individual that these years were, in hindsight, something very special.”

Ingolstadt/Oschersleben, September 18, 2011 – Audi, Audi, Audi – only 14 days after the one-two-three triumph in the rain battle at Brands Hatch the brand with the four rings again took the whole podium at a DTM race in similarly difficult conditions. At Oschersleben, Mattias Ekström (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline) triumphed in front of leader of the standings Martin Tomczyk (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) and rookie Edoardo Mortara (Audi Sport Team Rosberg).
For Audi this marked the 60th victory in total in the most popular international touring car series, the sixth in the current season and an important step toward another DTM title. With a sensational recovery Martin Tomczyk managed to advance to second place after having started from position 14, extending his overall lead by nine points before the last two races. Consequently, the Bavarian driver living in Switzerland will already have the first match ball and chance of securing an early title win for Audi at Valencia (Spain) on October 2.

We recently introduced you to Audi racing Veteran Don Istook. Don is a great friend of QuattroWorld and has been racing cars since 1977. When Don heard about the Audi TT RS he immediatly began to lust for one. Audi answered that call and provided Don with the very first TT RS in the United States. Audi asked Don if he would be available to film the car. Don arranged to get Eric Harten’s 1983 Audi quattro, Colin Cohen’s very rare Sport quattro, and his World Challenge TT race car to help in the filming at Texas Motor Speed. The below video is the culmination of all of their hard work.

We learned this morning of the passing of 26 year-old Dane Christian Bakkerud stemming from a car crash on Saturday evening in Wimbledon, UK.
His last major start came at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans with Privateer Team Kolles Audi racing the R10 TDI. Bakkerud had gotten his start with Audi the previous year in DTM before joining the Kolles team.
He had build up his racing career starting in Formula BMW, British Formula 3 and GP2 between 2002-2008.
He was a podium finisher in Formula BMW in Germany and the UK, and his career highlight was a British F3 win for Carlin at Mugello in 2006.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Family & Friends on this tragic occasion.
Audi is now preparing the successful R8 LMS customer sport model for the U.S. market as well. A dedicated racing version conforming to Grand-Am regulations is planned to make its debut at the anniversary race of the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2012 in the hands of customers.
Audi’s successful GT3 sports car has celebrated more than 100 victories in Europe, Asia, Australia and South America. From 2012 on, the Audi R8 LMS will now also be available on the North American market. For this purpose, Audi is developing and homologating the brand’s first customer sports race car for the regulations of the Grand-Am Endurance Series in the USA.
Right in time for the 50th running of the Daytona 24 Hours (January 28 to 29, 2012) an endurance race tested, attractive new GT race car will be available to Audi’s customers. With overall victories at the Bathurst 12 Hours in Australia, the Spa and Zolder 24 Hours in Belgium and another GT3 victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours the production-derived GT3 race car which the U.S. version is based on has again proven its qualities on numerous occasions this year.

HOW YOU GET TO FIRST

I’m not a guy that excites very easily, especially on the race track. Having been a runner, biker and triathlete for several years…as well as racing cars since 1977 (let‘s see…IMSA, SCCA Club, SCCA Pro Speedvision, Grand-Am, World Challenge, NASA, PCA…maybe more?), the old heart rate is usually down at the low end of…beats per minute. I can sit on the grid at Watkins Glen, Daytona, Road America, or about any track, waiting for a Grand-Am or World Challenge race to start…and almost fall asleep! So, when AUDI’s Facebook campaign (to gauge interest in bringing over the TT RS) was announced last year, I felt a little “thump, thump” in my chest! So, I emailed Doug Clark, General Manager of Customer Strategy & Engagement with Audi of America, about my seriousness in obtaining one of the first RS’s in the country…..I got several more “thumps” when he actually emailed me back! Model change in the DTM: From 2012 on, Audi will bank on the A5 in the most popular international touring car racing series. The coupe, which is internally named “R17,” will replace the four-door A4 DTM with which Audi has won the prestigious DTM title four times since 2004.
The technically and visually upgraded A5 that is will be arriving at dealerships shortly provides the basis for the new DTM car. “In 2012 new Technical Regulations will come into effect in the DTM,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “We’ve got exactly the right model for that in the A5. We’re convinced that we’ll be able to continue Audi’s success story with it in the DTM.”

The Audi R18 TDI that won the Le Mans 24 Hours a week ago returned to its origins. On the premises of the plant in Ingolstadt the successful sport prototype presented itself to Audi’s employees on Tuesday morning.
After Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer have won the Le Mans 24 Hours Audi’s employees welcomed the “homecomers”. The victorious Audi R18 TDI drove around the premises of the main plant. All three drivers and Head of Audi Motorsport were on location and signed autographs.
