Automobile Magazine’s annual Automobile of the Year award is one of the most prestigious and most sought after awards that a vehicle manufacturer can win. This year the Audi A7 was chosen as the winner which doesn’t come as a huge surprise to those of us who have driven this masterpiece of design and technology. It truly is a pinnacle for Audi because it is perhaps the best showcase of Audi’s passion for style, technology and sportiness.
Automobile Magazine’s 2012 Automobile of the Year, the Audi A7, does not represent a dramatic change of pace for its maker. Audi has been building handsome, fast, and rewarding luxury cars for some time now. Anchored by Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive, bristling with of-the-moment technologies, and surrounding its passengers with an artfully crafted interior, the A7 is exactly in keeping with the cars that this brand has been turning out. As editor-in-chief Jean Jennings said, “It’s the culmination of everything Audi has promised.”

When the A7 approaches people from a distance the first thing people notice is the LEDs and wonder what it is. The car is very wide and appears low to the ground. The single frame grill and the horizontal lines help to highlight how wide the car really is. The main thing they see is a nice coupe like body shape and then seconds later they realize it’s actually an elegant four door coupe, the Audi A7.
When Audi launched the 2012 A7 in North America they asked people to define what #bolddesign Is? They rented a huge electronic billboard in New York City’s Time Square and allowed people to post their responses from various social media sources. As well launched an Internet campaign where people could submit their opinions to win an R8 driving experience. For me #bolddesign Is: building a car that looks as good as it drives, is efficient, comfortable and a technological marvel. The A7 is that car.

Last month at the press launch of the Audi A7 in New York City, we were privileged to see a preview of this commercial. It adds some humor while demonstrating the progress that the Audi A7 brings to the luxury car market. We think it is brilliantly clever, what do you think? Watch the commercial and let us know what you think!
“Based on the current order situation, we expect a strong first quarter in 2011”, said Peter Schwarzenbauer, AUDI AG Board Member for Marketing and Sales. “Development of the business in our European export markets is important to our annual forecast, which calls for 1.2 million cars to be sold. And I see strong signs here, with an increase of 18.6 percent in January alone”, Schwarzenbauer continued.
Today we joined thousands of spectators from around the world as Audi launched their all new Audi A7 Sportback live from the ‘Pinakothek der Moderne’ art museum in Munich. It was quite a spectacle and featured many guest speakers. The A7 is meant to fill the current gap between the Audi A6 and the Audi A8. The new sportback styling is similar to that of the Porsche Panamera and other “5 door” models from other manufacturers. The styling cues of the new A7 are on the cutting edge of the Audi stylesheet and portrays a very natural progression of the Audi brand. The best news yet is that this car is confirmed to be coming to North America! We will post more updates as we receive them.
Update: We have just uploaded a massive high-res image gallery of the all new Audi A7! Check it out the pictures at the bottom of the page – after the jump.

HERNDON, Va., Jul 26, 2010 – In the unique ambiance of the art museum “Pinakothek der Moderne”, Audi is presenting a one-of-a-kind car: the new Audi A7. With the sporty elegance of a coupe and the functionality of a five-door car, the A7 cuts a distinguished figure in the luxury class. In line with the principle of “Truth in Engineering” and demonstrating an overall concept that outclasses the competition, it redefines the large coupe segment.
Moreover, with its high-efficiency engines, the Audi A7 embodies our engineers’ understanding of efficiency in this vehicle class. And with the A7, Audi is setting additional milestones with its innovative offerings in terms of infotainment, assistance systems, driveability, comfort and safety.

The all new Audi A7 is due to release sometime in 2011. It is the sexier, sleeker version of the Audi A8. The A7 is likely to have a sticker price around $82,000-85,000 and will carry the same drivetrain options as the A8. It is unknown whether or not there will be an “S” version of the A7 but one can only hope.
The A7 will be Based on Audi’s new longitudinal modular platform technology. Johan de Nysschen says that the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Sportback concept car serves as a “very reliable indicator” of what the production model will look like. Judging by these recent spy shots that very much appears to be the case. While parts commonality will be “substantial,” de Nysschen says that the A7 will not use the full aluminum spaceframe design of the A8, although it will have aluminum elements.
