2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona – The Finish

If they can conserve those rear tires and they start coming for us… Those Audis will be strong… uhhh they are really really good out there so we will see…

Audi entered their 2nd Rolex 24 at Daytona this year with hopes of at least finishing the race with all 4 of their cars. The Porsches are strong contenders with over 50 years of racing history at Daytona they know the track well. Their over all design and power makes them some of the quickest cars on the track. But it all came down to the Audi strategy which turned out to be superior to the rest of the cars in the GT class. While the others were playing games with fuel and tire changes the Audi teams stayed consistent until the last moment where they were able to spring ahead.

2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona – 1-2 victory for the Audi R8 GRAND-AM

Words & Photos Mike Juergens

Audi customer teams Alex Job Racing and APR Motorsport gave the Audi R8 GRAND-AM a 1-2 victory in the GT class at the Daytona 24 Hours. The #24 R8 of Filipe Albuquerque/Oliver Jarvis/Edoardo Mortara/Dion von Moltke crossed the finish line just 1.4 seconds ahead of the #52 R8 of Ian Baas, Marc Basseng, René Rast and Frank Stippler.

In dramatic closing stages all three Audi customer teams Alex Job Racing, APR Motorsport and Rum Bum Racing chose different strategies. Following a contact between René Rast (R8 #52) and Markus Winkelhock (R8 #13) which dropped the Rum Bum R8 from first to seventh place, Rum Bum Racing opted for a fuel gamble which, however, didn’t work out: On the final lap, the #13 R8 stopped with an empty fuel tank.

2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona – 2 Hours to go

Words & Photos Mike Juergens

With less than 2-hours left for the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona the Audi’s have been trading places with the Porsche’s quite frequently for the lead. The race has not been an easy one for the Audi’s and not due to mechanical issues but more of an issue with the rules and aggressive race officials. Frank Stippler the driver of the #52 APR R8 GRAND-AM reported that they picked up some grass in their radiators and it caused the car to overheat. The engine went into limp mode and they lost time due to having to take an easy lap and short shifting the car. Then, just before the end of hour 21 a controversial 30 second penalty was issued for avoidable contact to the #24 Alex Job Racing Audi R8 GRAND-AM for a spin during hour 20. Seven GT cars were on the lead-lap with two hours to go. Including one Audi R8 GRAND-AM from each of the three Audi customer teams. The #13 RumBum car was able to make a comeback thanks to good strategy and fast lap-times.

Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona – 10 Hour Update

Words: Josh Decker / Photos: Mike Juergens

All of the Audi R8 Grand-Am cars are running strong and in the top 10. The #52 APR entry was leading handily when it came in for a scheduled pit stop – however Grand Am officials mistakenly accused them of coming in when the pits were closed. This was not the case and the team has video evidence. Unfortunately though the officials decided to hold the car for well over 1 lap as penalty dropping them back to P10. We are very disheartened to see this unfortunate turn of events – but the good news is that the car is running fast and strong and they are making up pace. They made it back up to P8 but dropped to P12 after a drivers change. For an insider look at what goes on behind the scenes, check out APR’s live chat on their homepage where CEO Stephen Hooks is keeping fans up to speed.

2013 Rolex 24 at Daytona – Race Start Gallery

We are a bit over 2-hours into the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Audi cars are running very well and showing signs of being able to hold their own. The WeatherTech car has been able to maintain their pace set during qualifying and remain the fastest Audi and they show no signs of slowing down.  But with any 24-hour race there’s a lof of time left and anything can happen.

2013 Rolex 24 At Daytona – Friday recap galleries

Friday was a very busy day for us here at the Daytona International Speedway. I started our day with the best seat in the house the race control start-stop stand which is perched 30-feet over the track. It was a surreal experience to look out and see the whole track while the cars are flying around the track underneath. Then I was able to cross off a 2nd bucket list item and take a hot lap of the track in an Audi RS 5. It was really incredible to be able to experience the track first hand and approaching the banking is something that will soon not forget. I ended the day with team photos and dinner with Audi Sport customer racing. They brought the #74 Audi R8 Grand-AM which is used as a benchmarking car and allowed us to sit in it and check out the car without the crowds. On display was the clutches used in the road going car vs. the grand-am car and the changes are pretty incredible. It’s much smaller, stronger, lighter and it removes any damping added to the road car to reduce driveline thrashing. In just a few hours the race will get underway and we will be updating you as the race progresses.

Audi gave us some “if all goes well” figures for the race:

  • 768 laps, 4329 km (2,689 miles)
  • 30 pit stops, 2190 L (578 gallons) of fuel
  • 20 sets of slick tires (Grand-AM limit)
  • 23h 28m driving time, 32m in pits
  • 64% full throttle (15h 01m in the race)
  • 28 gear shifts per lap, 21,504 in the race
  • 13.9 steering wheel turns per lap, 10,675 during the race
  • 1,523 hp max. braking power (Bus Stop chicane)
  • 8.3 MJ/lap brake energy, 6.37 GJ in 24 hours

Audi customers are set for Daytona

  • Four Audi R8 GRAND-AM cars at 24-hour race in Florida
  • Audi factory drivers reinforce U.S. customer teams
  • Audi R8 also used as pace car
Audi Sport customer racing is promoting the Audi R8 and the U.S. racing version of the fascinating mid-engine sports car with a strong line-up at the 24-hour race at Daytona (Florida) on January 26/27.
With extended support from the Audi customer sport department, the American Alex Job Racing, APR Motorsport and Rum Bum Racing teams are fielding a total of four Audi R8 GRAND-AM cars. The U.S. version of the successful customer racing sports car from AUDI AG has been subjected to further technical development for the 2013 season and will be meeting with strong competition in the field of GT cars at the U.S. endurance classic.

“We’re expecting a highly balanced and competitive field in the GT category this year,” says Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “We’ve got reliable race cars and a good strategy – but our drivers play the crucial role. That’s why we’re supporting our customer teams at Daytona this year with a high-caliber driver squad. Our aim is clear: Everyone who’s toying with the idea of getting involved in the GRAND-AM Series should put the Audi R8 GRAND-AM on their short list of choices.”
