Audi wins its historic 11th victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also the first victory for a hybrid at Le Mans! 2012 also marks the 2nd time in a row since 2006 that an Audi has started on pole position. 2012 was also the 2nd time that Audi has entered 4 cars into the historic race. As always Audi’s Le Mans victory was hard fought and even with the weather on their side accidents were common by the end of the race 21 cars had retired included the two Toyota’s and the Delta Wing. With two hours left of this very eventful 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans we are getting ready for the trophy presentation. Currently the #1 R18 etron hybrid is in first place followed by the #2 R18 etron hybrid and the #4  R18 ultra. The #3 R18 ultra in 5th place and fighting it’s way back into 4th. The past few hours have been very dramatic as both Allan McNish in the #2 car and Marc Gene in the #3 car crashed their cars causing significant front-end damage. Both were able to drive their cars back to the pits but lost significant time and their places. The #2 car was repaired in less than 6 minutes while the #3 damage was a bit worse and took more time.

After 11 hours of running Audi has been able to maintain it’s 1st place position after trading off briefly with the #7 Toyota this afternoon. After making contact with the Delta Wing the Toyota was forced to take an extended pit stop to make repairs. Shortly after the Toyota was back in the garage for a power steering replacement and for a full check up. At around 1:30 AM local time the Toyota was pulled into the garage and retired from the race. They had fallen too far back to be competitive but they have gained lots of insight and after the brief battle with the R18 etron quattro we know it’s a fierce competitor. We look forward to the 24 Hours of SPA rematch.  Continue reading ‘Gallery: 24 Hours of Le Mans 2012 – 11 Hour Update Audi running steady in 1-2-3′

It’s been a very eventful 3-hours. The No.3 Dumas crashes while lapping the #79 Flying Lizard Porsche being driven by Seth Neiman in the first chicane. Dumas got out of the car and ripped all of the damaged front body work off the car and proceeded to drive back to the pits with the front right wheel flapping around. He lost some time and was bumped into 22nd place.

The #1 Audi R18 etron hybrid being driven by Marcel Fassler was trading postions with the #7 Toyota Hybrid after Toyota was able to make up some serious ground. They had traded the first position several times in some of the best driving of the whole race. The battle was put on hold. When around 8:00 PM the #8 Toyota Hybrid being driven by Anthony Davidson and the #81 AFCorse Ferrari being driven by Piergiuseppe Perezzini made contact and sent the Toyota airborne causing it to flip several times from nearly top speed and crashing into the safety barriers and coming to a stop. Both drivers have escaped without any serious injuries.

After 4 hours the Audi’s and Toyota’s have been trading 2, 3, 4 places back in forth as Audi has maintained it’s 1st place lead since the start. A minor issue with the #2 R18 etron quattro forced Tom Kristensen to the pits due to rear vibrations. There was a large peice of rubber logged in the suspension of the car which was quickly resolved. After the stop it forced the #2 car into 5th place. Other than the the car has been very clean so far with no contact or other accidents.

Photos & Words: Mike Juergens & Josh Decker

The 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been underway for just over an hour now and it was incredible to watch the 4 R18s cross the starting line and take off down the track towards the Dunlop Bridge. The first hour hasn’t been without incident as the #4 R18 ultra car was forced to return to the pits to address an issue with the rear suspension. While the #3 R18 ultra was forced to the pits with a rear left tire puncture. Andree Lotter in the #1 R18 etron quattro has set the fastest lap so far with a 3:26.302 18-minutes into the race. The Toyotas are unrelenting however Audi is keeping them in their place sitting 3rd and 4th.

Gallery: Audi is fastest in morning warmup at Le Mans

With the race just 4 hours away from beginning, Audi posted the top 4 times in warm up. Toyota is over a second off of pace. It is worth mentioning that it is extremely wet out there so it is apparent that none of the teams were pushing it very hard. Even still the track conditions caused the #1 car to have a minor off, into the muddy grass. You can see it below in the gallery covered in mud! We can’t wait for the start of the race! Audi R18 e-tron quattro dominates in qualifying

The #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro claimed it’s first pole tonight with a 3.23,787 set by Andre Lotterer. The quattro powered car is the first all-wheel-drive to claim the pole at Le Mans. Teammate Romain Dumas in the #3 Audi R18 ultra claimed second with a 3:24,087 place followed by Tom Kristensen in fourth in the #2 Audi R18 e-tron quattro. The #4 Audi R18 ultra qualified sixth with Marco Bonanomi at the wheel with a 3.26,420. The Audi field was broken up by the brand new Toyota TS030 hybrid. Former Peugeot driver Anthony Davidson managed to grab the third position with a 3.24,842. We knew the Toyota’s would be competitive entering the race but as we know in Le Mans speed isn’t everything as they will need to survive the whole 24-hours with an untested car. We are looking forward to the Parade through City Center tomorrow and the Race starting at 5:00 PM Saturday.
