DTM comeback for Tom Kristensen

  • Mike Rockenfeller sits out Lausitzring
  • Complete recovery has priority for Audi
  • Le Mans record winner as substitute

Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen (43) will make a comeback in the DTM this coming weekend at the Lausitzring. The Dane replaces third in the standings Mike Rockenfeller (27) at the wheel of the E-POSTBRIEF Audi A4 DTM for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.

Mike Rockenfeller is recovering quickly but Audi wants to be completely sure that he has sufficient time to fully regenerate following his heavy accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “Knowing well that Mike is fighting for the DTM title this year his full recovery has absolute priority,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “After prior consultation with our team doctor I have decided to rest him this coming weekend and also for the 24 hour race at the Nürburgring for this reason.”

With Tom Kristensen an old hand returns for one race to the Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline squad. The eight-time Le Mans winner competed between 2004 and 2009 for Audi in the DTM before concentrating solely on the sport prototype program. Although he considers the Lausitzring not to be one of his favorite circuits, the Dane has fond memories of the circuit: he mounted the podium as best Audi driver there in 2005 and 2006. “Tom K.” has won four DTM races in his career to date.

“First of all I’m sorry for ‘Rocky’ that he will miss this race. I wish him a speedy recovery. After being out of the DTM for two years it will certainly be very tough to come back. But when Dr. Ullrich called me it was self-evident for me to help Audi Sport in this situation,” says the Dane. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the old friends again and will try to substitute ‘Rocky’ as well as possible.”

Audi TV releases video recap of the 2011 Le Mans race

The Audi R18 TDI claimed its first Le Mans overall victory on its maiden trip to 24 hours of Le Mans. The race was spectacularly emotional, as two of the R18s ended their races prematurely in spectacular wrecks. However the pole sitting #2 R18 TDI fought a hard battle against 4 Peugeots all by itself and in the end won a victory by the very narrowest of margins with only a 13 second lead. Perhaps Dr. Ullrich said it best, “It was just mountains and valleys of emotions for all of us.” This video recap does an amazing job of capturing this experience and giving you a small glimpse into what it is like at Le Mans.

Audi wins historic 10th victory at Le Mans!

Audi claims victory at the 79th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans! André Lotterer was able to maintain an incredible pace and setting the fastest lap at (3m 25.289) on lap 229. He was able to successfully navigate the artificial traffic caused by the Peugeot drivers in an attempt to slow him down and crossed the finish line victoriously! The race was a dramatic one with both the #1 car and #3 cars exiting the race in very scary wrecks that destroyed the car. The #2 car set the standard early by taking pole position but they did not lead throughout the race. Once they were the only car left you could tell the stakes were raised much higher. We are so excited for the entire team at Audi Sport and are very thankful for allowing us to share this experience with them! Congratulation to Leena Gade as she is the very first woman engineer to represent the winning team at Le Mans! We will post more pictures and news soon so stay tuned!
