The Ariel Atom 2 and KTM X-BOW look like mechanical insects out of a Michael Bay movie. You can’t drive a mile on any street without someone nearly causing a wreck while trying to figure out what it is they’re staring at. These are both street-legal, lightweight, purpose-built track demons, powered by potent, boosted four-cylinder engines, with power-to-weight ratios that are off the charts. It’s like having everything you’ve ever wanted in one car, and another one for good luck.
The chosen battleground for this match-up is a Northwestern mecca for hoonage of all sorts: Pacific Grand Prix near Seattle. The track is just shy of a mile long, has 15 of some of the greatest turns ever, and a straight long enough to accommodate triple-digit speeds. The track hosts karting championship series, motocross racing and drifting events. The racetrack at Pacific GP is simply perfect for these cars. It is almost as if the owner somehow knew that there would someday be a perfect car for this track and if he built it, it would come. Either these cars were made for this track or the track was made for these cars. There is no other possible explanation to tell you how *perfectly* matched the track was for this carbon clad pair. Police chases happen all the time all around the world. Unfortunately for most criminals they are in something incredibly slow and lame like a white Ford Bronco ala O.J. Simpson. This criminal on the other hand, had the keys to perhaps the most capable getaway car of all time, the Audi R8. The fact is however, that even an Audi R8 can’t outrun a radio and it didn’t take long for the epic chase to end in a cloud of gunfire. The car was apparently shot up an incredible 37 times! And what is even more incredible is that the driver of the R8 survived somehow. We don’t know much more then that at this time but will update this story with more details as we get them. Audi R8 LMS once again best GT3 sportscar in 24h race
Basseng/Fässler/Stippler third overall
Audi TT RS best front-wheel drive car and SP 4T class winner
The Audi R8 LMS was once again class winner on its third outing in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. The mid-engine sportscar from AUDI AG won the GT3 car class for the third time in succession and, like last year, finished third overall. The Audi TT RS also impressed in front of the 250,000 spectators: the quattro GmbH development demonstrator took the checkered flag in 14th position overall and won the SP 4T class as best front-wheel drive car in the field of 202 cars. Fourth round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in Italy
Audi Sport Team Joest with two new race cars
New aerodynamics package for more downforce
Only three weeks after the triumph at the Le Mans 24 Hours the next endurance test is on the agenda for the Audi R18 TDI. The 6-hour race at Imola, Italy, is about scoring important points in the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) – the racing series that in 2012 will evolve into the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The Audi R18 TDI that won the Le Mans 24 Hours a week ago returned to its origins. On the premises of the plant in Ingolstadt the successful sport prototype presented itself to Audi’s employees on Tuesday morning.
After Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer have won the Le Mans 24 Hours Audi’s employees welcomed the “homecomers”. The victorious Audi R18 TDI drove around the premises of the main plant. All three drivers and Head of Audi Motorsport were on location and signed autographs.
249,500 spectators witnessed one of the closest finishes ever
Lowest fuel consumption of all Audi races at Le Mans
Up to 54 consecutive laps with one set of Michelin tires
Audi recorded its tenth victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with ultra lightweight technology, an innovative V6 TDI engine and the first ever use of full LED headlights. The most important facts of a memorable race:
After 24 hours the Audi R18 TDI with start number “2” had a winning margin of exactly 13.854 seconds over the second placed Peugeot. This equates to 763 meters. The victorious Audi R18 TDI covered 4,838.295 kilometers. The average speed was 201.266 km/h.
One of my very favorite events of the year is the annual Audi Expo show and get together that takes place every June here in the Seattle area. The Pacific Northwest is known for its strong Audi Club and above average Audi ownership numbers. So it is no surprise that our annual party is one of the largest ALL AUDI events in the entire country! Every year we have nearly 300 Audis and it is a fun event for families as well. This is the one even in the NW that you simply cannot miss!
Special Note: This year the event is moving from Bison Creek in Burien to the Pacific Grand Prix racing facility adjacent to Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wa!
Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen (43) will make a comeback in the DTM this coming weekend at the Lausitzring. The Dane replaces third in the standings Mike Rockenfeller (27) at the wheel of the E-POSTBRIEF Audi A4 DTM for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.
Mike Rockenfeller is recovering quickly but Audi wants to be completely sure that he has sufficient time to fully regenerate following his heavy accident at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “Knowing well that Mike is fighting for the DTM title this year his full recovery has absolute priority,” says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “After prior consultation with our team doctor I have decided to rest him this coming weekend and also for the 24 hour race at the Nürburgring for this reason.”
With Tom Kristensen an old hand returns for one race to the Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline squad. The eight-time Le Mans winner competed between 2004 and 2009 for Audi in the DTM before concentrating solely on the sport prototype program. Although he considers the Lausitzring not to be one of his favorite circuits, the Dane has fond memories of the circuit: he mounted the podium as best Audi driver there in 2005 and 2006. “Tom K.” has won four DTM races in his career to date.
“First of all I’m sorry for ‘Rocky’ that he will miss this race. I wish him a speedy recovery. After being out of the DTM for two years it will certainly be very tough to come back. But when Dr. Ullrich called me it was self-evident for me to help Audi Sport in this situation,” says the Dane. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the old friends again and will try to substitute ‘Rocky’ as well as possible.”
The Audi R18 TDI claimed its first Le Mans overall victory on its maiden trip to 24 hours of Le Mans. The race was spectacularly emotional, as two of the R18s ended their races prematurely in spectacular wrecks. However the pole sitting #2 R18 TDI fought a hard battle against 4 Peugeots all by itself and in the end won a victory by the very narrowest of margins with only a 13 second lead. Perhaps Dr. Ullrich said it best, “It was just mountains and valleys of emotions for all of us.” This video recap does an amazing job of capturing this experience and giving you a small glimpse into what it is like at Le Mans.
