- Le Mans “dress rehearsal” at the 1000-kilometer race at Spa (Belgium)
- Record field comprising 60 sports prototypes and GT cars
- Audi Sport Team Joest competes with three cars
Now the action will begin in earnest. After thousands of test kilometers including the recent test day at Le Mans, the new Audi R18 TDI is ready for its first race. At the 1000-kilometer race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) on May 7, Audi Sport Team Joest will perform its “dress rehearsal” for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
The racing debut of a new race car is always a very special event and Audi Sport has good experiences in this regard. Since 2000 every new sports prototype of the brand with the four rings has won its first race. In 2000, 2006 and 2009 Sebring in Florida (USA) was the venue of the respective debut victories of the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. The updated R15 TDI, internally designated as “R15 plus,” won its maiden race as well, at Le Castellet (France).

The 2011 Audi TT has been a long time coming to the U.S. Audi introduced the refreshed model a full year ago in Germany, and while a few TTS versions arrived last fall, the base 2.0 TT is only now appearing at a dealer near you.
Maybe the wait has been even longer, though. The second generation TT has yet to outrun the shadow of its groundbreaking predecessor. Blame overly cautious styling, familial competition from the more flamboyant and spacious A5, or the economy. Sales of the Mk. 2 TT have struggled to gain traction in America.
Audi could well have withdrawn the TT from our market in favor of models that are more in demand. But give Audi credit. They still consider the TT a halo car and have burnished its image with a host of improvements for 2011, not the least of which is the automaker’s versatile 211-hp powerplant. Is this the TT we’ve been expecting all along?
It was clear from discussions with Audi executives at the presentation of the TT RS in Chicago that they feel the entire 2011 TT line represents a better value. Since the base 2.0 version will likely make up the majority of sales, spending a week with one will help put Audi’s value proposition to the test.

- Equal balance between three R18 TDI cars on test day
- Audi Sport Team Joest has completed comprehensive program
- Considerable spectator turnout on Easter Sunday
Ingolstadt/Le Mans, April 24, 2011 – The Audi R18 TDI had a successful first public appearance at Le Mans. 24,987 enthusiastic fans witnessed how Audi Sport Team Joest prepared for the 24 Hour race (on June 11/12) on Easter Sunday with all three cars and drivers. The innovative sports car with its ultra lightweight technology set the two fastest times at the end of the test day which is back now.
Whilst it’s traditionally not about lap times on test day, much more significant findings matter for Audi after eight hours. The innovative diesel-powered sportscar was prepared very well for the demanding Le Mans track, all scheduled programs have been completed and the ten drivers adapted perfectly to the demanding circuit. Apart from the nine race drivers, test and reserve driver Marco Bonanomi was also behind the wheel and drove at Le Mans for the first time.

Audi factory driver Tom Kristensen put the #3 Audi R18 TDI at the top of the time sheets at the end of the much anticipated return of Le Mans test day. All three R18s were in the top four and all 5 top cars were separated by an astonishingly low .617 seconds! The Le Mans test day is a tradition that goes back many years, however during the last few years it has been missing from the schedule. It was announced last year that the Le Mans test day would return to La Sarthe. This is especially important for Audi who has a brand new race car to prepare for the 24 hours of Le Mans which will be run once again in June.

One thing is for sure, with test results this close each team will have a lot of work to do to try and find some more speed if they want to distance themselves from the pack. It will be an epic race come June, and QuattroWorld.com will be there on site to bring you the best coverage possible!
Note: We will post an update to this with more pictures later today so stay tuned!
