Vorsprung durch Technik: Research for the Future

Audi AG has posted an inside look at the testing involved with developing new vehicles. Audi Engineers put an immeasurable amount of time into each vehicles development cycle perfecting the things we take for granted. Most of these technologies will probably go unnoticed to most drivers and passengers but they are there protecting them from the worst case scenarios.

Test at the reference automotive electronics systems are used to an Audi through its paces to test. Employees of the Electronics Center analyze the functional effects of electrical system voltage fluctuations.

B8 Audi RS 4 Test Mule Spied Testing at Nurburgring

Our friends at Fourtitude have discovered some great photos of the upcoming RS 4. The current test mule is wrapped in S4 camouflage running around the Nurburgring.

A new Audi test mule with HN (Neckarsulm = quattro GmbH) has been turned up yesterday testing at the fabled Nurburgring. The car is interesting, obviously based on the body of an A4 Avant but with some very notable changes. And though some of the styling cues suggest S4 like the quad exhausts and the badge on the grille, we’re nearly certain this is a preproduction drivetrain mule of the RS 4 Avant.

What makes us think it’s an RS 4? The RS 5 20-inch wheels and immense RS-labeled brakes are the first clue, though a closer look shows widened wheel arches on the front fenders and some makeshift rear lip extensions to cover the wider stance of an RS car. None of these are S-car fare. Also, an S-car mule would likely use plates that start with IN for Ingolstadt and not HN as is the case with quattro GmbH test cars.

Our good friends at APR have announced the APR B5 S4 RSC Exhaust System is coming soon!  Straight through exhaust without drone. Perfect for those pushing the limits of the 2.7T.

We are hoping to get our hands on one for our Project B5 S4.

Reflective Sound Cancellation allows for maximum exhaust gas flow while completely eliminating in cabin sound resonance (drone). RSC™ incorporates innovative technologies developed in conjunction with NASA. With limited use of packing materials and no baffles, RSC™ allows for a completely straight and free flowing exhaust path through the RSC™ mufflers. Reflective Cancellation bounces the undesirable sound waves into each other to attenuate the wave and completely eliminate the low frequency tones that create drone. Each RSC™ muffler is tuned to eliminate specific, undesirable sound frequencies allowing only the engine’s desirable exhaust notes to be heard and improving performance.

The B5 S4 in the video has a full APR RSC Exhaust System with an APR Stage III K04 Turbocharger System.

Five-millionth Audi A4 leaves the assembly line

  • Jubilee car is an Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro in Misano Red
  • Production chief Frank Dreves: “Major milestone in Audi’s success story”
  • Audi A4 is the most popular car in its class

Today the Audi plant in Ingolstadt produced the five-millionth Audi A4 – an Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro in Misano Red. This production milestone is the latest evidence of a success story that began in 1994 when the A4 model name was adopted. A great favorite with customers, the A4 accounts for a high proportion of production capacity at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm plants.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich and others discuss the new Audi R18 TDI

Yesterday we posted some exciting footage of the Audi R18 TDI protoype racecar on track at Sebring. This was by far the most detailed and in depth footage anyone has seen of the car. We also have seen countless pictures posted here and all over the internet of this new thoroughbred, but what makes it so different from the R15? We are please to bring you some very special interviews with three key people. First you will hear from the head of Audi Motorsport, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, next Howden “H” Haynes shares his thoughts and finally Ullrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. I hope you enjoy the interviews! We mixed in some of the best snippets from the R18 video as well to get you excited.

A few of my favorite quotes:

“It is difficult to say if automatically a good looking car is fast, but one thing is sure, ugly cars have never been fast.” Dr. Ullrich

“If Darth Vader had a car, this would be his”, H. Haynes

Let us know your thoughts!

Next generation Audi RS4 Avant mule spied

What is believed to be a 2014 RS4 Avant test mule was spied on the streets of Germany. This is not what the next generation RS4 will look like, in fact this is merely a modified S4 Avant chassis, fitted with what we guess is the RS4 engine, transmission, brakes and suspension. If you look closely, you can even see the RS logo peering out behind the large RS5 wheels. Most agree, that the next generation RS4 will be sporting a 400-450 HP Supercharged V6, aimed at increased fuel efficiency and lower weight. It is also fairly possible that we’ll see it come with an updated version of the 4.2 V8 TFSI platform that is found in the RS5. We also don’t know if this car will make it to the USA, and if it does the chances of it coming over in Avant form will be even slimmer. Only time will tell, and for now all we can do is drool over these great pictures which were captured by MotorAuthority.com spies photographers. Be sure to check their post out for the full lineup of photos…

Audi R18 test day video in high definition

Last week Audi tested out their brand new toy, the Audi R18 TDI prototype racecar that was built to be a Le Mans champion. To get to that point however, Audi engineers and drivers must spend countless days and months testing. Audi Motorsport held one of these test days just this past week at Sebring following the 12 hours of Sebring.

We are very fortunate to have access to this very detailed and exciting footage! We hope that you enjoy it as much as we have. This really gets me excited to see it in person when we head over for the 24 hours of Le Mans in June.

Special thanks to Audi USA for providing us with this great footage to share with you!

Australian music star Dianna Corcoran shoots “Wrong Girl” music video at Audi Dealership

There have been a growing number of musicians that have featured Audis in their music videos. We just found another one, and this, it is Australian sensation Dianna Corcoran. She takes it to the next level by shooting the entire music video at Audi Centre Sydney. Dianna is a pop-country star down under, and after watching this video we can certainly see why. Oh, and her music is pretty good too. While we know this video is from last year, we felt it worthy enough of a post! Enjoy it…

Farewell to David E. Davis

As some of you who follow the automotive world may of heard that David E. Davis has passed away due to cancer.

David E. Davis, Jr. was an automobile journalist and magazine publisher. His career in the automotive industry spanned from race car driver, factory worker and car salesman to ad salesman with Road & Track and copywriter for Corvette advertisements before becoming a writer for Car and Driver magazine in 1962. He wrote for that publication until 1967 and later became its editor and publisher from 1976 to 1985 before leaving to found Automobile magazine. Time magazine called Davis the “dean of automotive journalists.”

I want to end this with one of my favorite reviews of an Audi. I think David conveys our love for Audi & Quattro perfectly. This particular review is of an RS4 that Audi had loaned him during their sponsorship of the 2007 California Mille.

Thank you David for sharing your love of automobiles with us all.
