Le Mans 2011: Allan McNish destroys the #3 Audi R18 in a horrific crash

We are happy to report that Allan McNish is ok after an absolutely horrible crash just past the Dunlop bridge. I was no less than 100 meters away when this happened and was among the very first photographers on the scene. I am so happy that my fellow photographers and the volunteer marshalls are all ok. I am sad to say that Allan, Dindo and Tom’s race is over but I am sure they are all just happy that Allan is not injured. This could have easily ended up much much worse. Watch the video below to see just how bad it could have been. We took a large number of photos and will upload them shortly. Photos by Josh Decker and Mike Juergens.

What a relief that Allan McNish is doing so well, and the Marshalls & photographers were uninjured, after such a horrific crash. My wife and I were watching when the crash occurred. Immediately, we felt nausea and shock. Our prayers go out to each and every person affected by this crash.
Additionally, I am so deeply impressed with the engineering that went into the Audi chassis that provides such extreme levels of safety for drivers. I am a systems safety engineer and can appreciate the Team’s effort. Computer modeling is valuable and accurate, but to see the “Test to Fail”, right in front of my eyes, was a clarifying moment, regarding Team Audi’s attention to detail. They exemplify Excellence. Good Job to All.
