Audi invites you to see what the the experts are saying about clean diesel as the Green Car of the Year Tour stopped by Argonne National Laboratory. Follow the link below to hear what Don Hillebrand, Director of Transportation Research, Argonne National Lab, had to say about how clean diesel cars, like the Audi A3 TDI, play a significant role in limiting fuel consumption and emissions.
This week Audi will demonstrate that the time is quickly approaching for clean diesel technology to provide a whole new level of solutions for the environment on the final leg of the Green Car of the Year Tour. Two Audi A3 TDI test cars will make a 1,000 mile journey using only 100% low-carbon RenDiesel, the drive will be called ‘Eureka! Diesel Drives the Future.’

- On ‘Eureka! Diesel Drives the Future’ tour, two Audi A3 TDI® cars will cover the length of California on Rentech synthetic diesel
- Demonstration next week will show how advanced diesel technologies and fuels can answer significant energy challenges soon
- Event caps successful run for the Audi A3 TDI as the Green Car Journal’s 2010 Green Car of the Year®
HERNDON, Va., Oct 18, 2010 - Audi TDI clean diesel technology – with its ability to reduce carbon emissions by 20% and its 30% fuel-economy gains over comparable gasoline engines – has demonstrated it belongs in the conversation surrounding America’s pressing energy concerns.
Validation of that came last year when the Green Car Journal named the Audi A3 TDI as its 2010 Green Car of the Year®, and into this year when U.S. consumer demand for Audi TDI models tripled original expectations.
And all of that was just the beginning.

- Best result of the season for Timo Scheider
- Mike Rockenfeller on the podium for the first time since 2007
- Mass collision deprives Mattias Ekström of last title chance
In front of an impressive turnout of 140,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) Audi put two drivers on the podium at the German finale of the DTM. Timo Scheider achieved his best result of the season with a second-place finish. Mike Rockenfeller in his 40th DTM race managed a podium result for the second time in his career.
After starting from the pole position Timo Scheider was leading the race for a long time. Only in the final phase he lost the remote duel against Paul Di Resta, who was using a different strategy and returned to the track in front of Scheider after a late second pit stop. As Di Resta was running on the fresher tires Scheider was no longer able to counter and was instructed by Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline to save the tires and secure second place.
“Obviously I would have liked to win the German finale here in front of our home crowd of fans for Audi,” said Scheider. “But we didn’t quite make it. Paul (Di Resta) was very quick, so we had to change our strategy and be a bit more aggressive. Unfortunately, that wasn’t completely sufficient. Still, being the best Audi driver again is a nice feeling.”
Mike Rockenfeller, who was by far the strongest driver of a 2008-specification car at Hockenheim and with a third-place finish clinched the first podium result of the season for Audi Sport Team Phoenix, was highly pleased. The Le Mans winner last mounted the podium in the DTM in 2007 at Oschersleben.
On the first few laps “Rocky” held up to the pressure by Gary Paffett who had won the past two Hockenheim races. After his first pit stop the German managed to gradually put a distance between himself and the former DTM Champion and to build up a cushion of more than five seconds. “My car was really good during the whole weekend,” raved Rockenfeller. “In the race it was running perfectly, particularly on fresh tires. Only toward the middle of my stints I had a little bit of oversteer.”
Martin Tomczyk and Oliver Jarvis went on a chase after Gary Paffett on the final laps but did not manage to bump the Briton from fourth place any more. “After my first attack my tires picked up some rubber off the track,” reported Tomczyk, who occupied fifth place just barely in front of Jarvis.
After a mass collision on lap one, just half of the 18 cars that had started from the grid finished the German finale. For Markus Winkelhock and Katherine Legge (both from Audi Sport Team Rosberg) the race on the new short circuit layout was over at the end of the “Parabolika” as quickly as it was for Miguel Molina, the best rookie in the 2010 DTM.
Mattias Ekström was entangled in the mass collision as well. At first the Swede was able to continue to drive his damaged A4 DTM but after two unscheduled pit stops had to retire on lap eight due to a broken right rear suspension. Before the race at Hockenheim Ekström had been the last Audi driver to still have chances of winning the DTM title.
“That ‘Eki’ was struck right on the first lap was of course really unfortunate for us and the fans,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “Consequently, the title will go to a Mercedes driver for the first time since 2006. Congratulations to Stuttgart! The level in the DTM is extremely high, that’s why this defeat after three triumphs is not an embarrassment for us but motivates us to regain our old strength in 2011 and bring the title back to Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm – which we also managed to do this year at the Le Mans 24 Hours. If you want to win the DTM, everything has got to fit perfectly. This year that simply wasn’t the case with us – today included.”
This was true for Alexandre Prémat as well, who had been running in the points before being brushed by Jamie Green in the pit lane. The right front suspension broke in the incident.

- Timo Scheider clinches pole position at German finale of the DTM
- Mike Rockenfeller on row one as well
- Seven Audi A4 DTM cars on the top nine grid positions
The brand that has been the first and only one in DTM history to win three consecutive titles handled the extremely difficult conditions in qualifying for the German finale of the 2010 DTM best: Timo Scheider clinched the pole position for Audi on the shortened Hockenheimring on a track that was wet from rain. His brand colleague Mike Rockenfeller will start from the first row too on Sunday (starting at 1:45 p.m. – local time – live on “Das Erste”) with his 2008-spec A4 DTM. With seven Audi A4 DTM cars on the top nine grid positions, the brand with the four rings is in an outstanding position for the race.

- Audi A4 DTM to fight for victory at Hockenheim
- New track version provides spectators with a special attraction
- Mattias Ekström still has a theoretical title chance
Round nine of the DTM at Hockenheim on October 17 (starting at 1:45 p.m. – local time – live on “Das Erste”) will see Audi make another attempt at fighting for the top on a new track layout after the most recent, unfortunate miss of a possible victory at Oschersleben.
A race with new circumstances: this year, Hockenheim – which has been the venue of the season opener and finale since the new DTM was launched in the 2000 season – will not mark the final event on the calendar for the first time. Instead Audi will be starting into the “German finale” of the season on this circuit before the two remaining rounds will be held at Adria (Italy) and Shanghai (China).
Most recently at Oschersleben, Audi managed to postpone an early title decision in the DTM with a third-place finish by Mattias Ekström. Timo Scheider, who was on the verge of taking the lead on lap 34, lost ground due to a puncture. After two consecutive DTM title wins the 32-year-old Audi “factory” driver thus dropped out of the group of candidates for the title. Instead Ekström, in fourth place of the standings, assumed the ranking of the best Audi driver in the 2010 DTM. The Swede is separated from the leader of the standings, Bruno Spengler, by 26 points.

Attending my first Petit Le Mans was such a great experience. Having just been at Le Mans in France I was excited to be able to compare the two races. I arrived at Road Atlanta early Wednesday morning and got our rental RV all set up for the week. My friends at APR were kind enough to reserve me a space next to their motorhomes right behind their booth on vendor lane. It was a very nice setup and we were made to feel as part of the family throughout the week. Corey, from oneighturbo.com would be my friendly guide for the week. Since he is an Atlanta local, he knows his way around Road Atlanta very well.

- Unfortunate third place at “Petit Le Mans” race
- Unusual incident costs crucial lap
- Second Audi R15 TDI lost ground due to accident
The thrilling duel of the diesel sports cars from Audi and Peugeot had spectators watching with bated breath again at the 13th edition of the “Petit Le Mans” race at Road Atlanta (U.S. state of Georgia). For more than six hours Audi had good prospects of clinching its tenth triumph at the American endurance classic. But after an unusual incident all that remained in the end was the eleventh consecutive “Petit Le Mans” podium.
For six hours the lead kept changing between Audi and Peugeot in front of a record crowd. Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish in the car that won this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour managed to repeatedly achieve a small lead. But at 17:51 hrs (local time), exactly 6 hours and 21 minutes after the race had started, Dindo Capello, who was leading at that time, had to come in for an unscheduled pit stop because an insert in his helmet prescribed by the regulations had come loose and the fireproof balaclava started to cover his eyes. Without being able to see anything, Capello had to let the Peugeot behind him pass and head for the pits in a blind flight.
