Tom Kristensen’s exclusive Le Mans Countdown – Part 13

Ingolstadt, May 31, 2010 – In a weekly column Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen gives some exclusive insights behind the scenes of the world’s most famous endurance race and the preparation by Audi Sport Team Joest.

“Today I’d like to tell you a few things about the track where the fastest 24-hour race of the world is held. Although the layout of this circuit has been repeatedly modified with new elements since 1923, the length of the track and all of its fascination has remained the same. Just once a year a race is held here and tests aren’t possible either because part of the circuit is made up of public roads that are only closed when the track is in use.

The biggest change arguably resulted from the two chicanes on the Hunaudières straight. Without these chicanes the cars used to achieve speeds of over 400 km/h, which really fills me with awe. Today’s speeds are ‘merely’ close to 340 km/h – but we’re setting faster lap times now on the 13.629-kilometer track. That shows much the technology has advanced over the past few decades.

Audi teams score points at Hockenheim
ADAC GT Masters: With a brace of sixth positions to its name Team Rosberg was the most successful Audi team at Hockenheim during the third ADAC GT Masters race weekend. In Saturday’s race Kenneth Heyer and Michael Ammermüller took three championship points with their Audi R8 LMS, in Sunday’s second race they crossed the finish line directly behind their sixth placed team mates Johannes Seidlitz and Bernd Herndlhofer. Christopher Mies and Luca Ludwig for team ABT Sportsline were seventh in the first race, unfortunately they retired on Sunday after a collision.

Audi DTM Team dominates Valencia

  • Mattias Ekström triumphs with victory
  • Four Audi A4 DTM cars in the points
  • Martin Tomczyk’s 2nd place finish taken away due to tire infraction

Editor’s Note: Since this article was written, Martin Tomczyk’s 2nd place finish taken away due to tire infraction. This brings Alexandre Prémat up to 3rd place however!

Ingolstadt/Valencia, May 23, 2010 – Audi struck back: after the disappointing season opener at Hockenheim Mattias Ekström and clinched a commanding one-two Audi victory at the second round of the 2010 DTM. With five A4 DTM cars in the top eight places, the brand with the four rings was the strongest manufacturer at the DTM’s debut at Valencia (Spain).

In front of the eyes of Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, the Chairman of the Management Board of the Volkswagen Group, Mattias Ekström delivered a perfect weekend: pole position, victory and fastest lap. The Swede took the lead at the start, managed to extend the gap to his rivals, achieved an advantage of up to six seconds, and then continued to control the pace in blazing heat of almost 30 degrees centigrade in the shade and track temperatures of about 50 degrees.

“If you haven’t won for such a long time you can really feel how sweet victory is,” said Ekström after clinching his 14th exploit in the most popular international touring car racing series – and his first after the race at Le Mans in October 2008. “Today, everything worked perfectly. My thanks go to Audi and Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. The tires held up too. I was a little worried when I felt some vibrations – but that was just pick-up on the tires. The ten points for the championship really feel good.”

The crucial factor on the 4.005-kilometer circuit at Valencia was the set-up, which Audi Sport’s technical squad managed to a T. It enabled Martin Tomczyk to advance from position nine on the grid to second with two late pit stops. “The strategy was outstanding,” enthused the German who had suffered a puncture at the Hockenheim season opener while clearly leading the race. “The car was running like a charm. I was able to drive one fast lap after the other. After my second pit stop I was on the track behind ‘Eki’. I didn’t expect the race to end so well for me after starting from position nine on the grid.”

For Audi, even a one-two-three win would have been possible at Valencia. But eight laps before the end of the race Oliver Jarvis coasted down without fuel pressure after a strong race and running in third place. “Of course that was a real misfortune for Oliver,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “Without the problem with the fuel pressure Audi might have even achieved a one-two-three victory. Still, we can be very pleased with the results. It was a great team performance. ‘Eki’, Oliver and Martin (Tomczyk) were able to control the race.”

With Alexandre Prémat, Timo Scheider and Mike Rockenfeller in places four, five and seven, three other Audi drivers finished in the points. Prémat (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) fought a fierce duel with Mercedes driver Gary Paffett in the early stages, which continued to be the subject of discussions after the race. “I’ve got no reason to apologize, that was 50:50,” said the Frenchman who in fourth place barely missed a podium finish.

Miguel Molina, as well, was battling with Gary Paffett – and not just once, but twice: in the first act, the 21-year-old local hero pushed passed the Briton’s Mercedes in a surprise attack. On the final lap Paffett countered and grabbed eighth place – and thus the final point – from Molina in a similarly tough maneuver.

Markus Winkelhock (Audi Sport Team Rosberg) had to park his Audi A4 DTM after 34 laps due to a defect on the rear suspension. His team colleague Katherine Legge was unable to contest the race due to an infection.

In the drivers standings Mattias Ekström with 13 points moved up with a one-point gap to Bruno Spengler (14 points). The next DTM race will be held two weeks from now at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz.

Event Recap: Southern Wörthersee 2010

Photos and Text by Elaine Bak

The drive into Helen, GA was breathtaking, our route took us directly through Cherokee National Park where we were greeted by the sweeping curves, and apexes that would be more at home on a race track than a state road. We arrived in Helen on the evening of Friday, May 14 and saw the quaint Alpine Village come upon us. Driving through the town towards our hotel we saw the APR guys surrounding their rig and the H20 staff working hard to make final preparations. The hotels and pubs in the center of Helen were buzzing, and the parking lots were filled with Volkswagens of all makes and models. We didn’t spot any other Audis but we were still hopeful as we arrived at the site for Southern Wörthersee 2010. Southern Wörthersee is an event that is mirrored after the Wörthersee Tour that has taken place in Reifnitz, Austria for over two decades, so the Bavarian-themed town of Helen was a perfect setting for the show.

Mattias Ekström takes pole position at Valencia DTM race

  • Mattias Ekström on position one at Valencia
  • Belated birthday gift for his mother
  • Eight Audi A4 DTM cars on the top eleven grid positions

Ingolstadt/Valencia, May 22, 2010 – In blazing heat it was a Swede who was best at keeping his cool: Mattias Ekström clinched the 55th pole position for Audi in the DTM at Valencia (Spain). His British team colleague Oliver Jarvis completed Audi’s exploit by taking position three. A total of eight Audi A4 DTM cars will start from the top eleven positions at the DTM’s debut at Valencia on Sunday.

At 28 degrees centigrade in the shade and constantly increasing tarmac temperatures, which were above 50 degrees at the end of qualifying, the 2004 and 2007 champion was 16 thousandths of a second quicker than Bruno Spengler in the best Mercedes on the crucial lap. My Audi works really well, I’m feeling very comfortable,” raved the Swede. “The track kept getting warmer and there was less and less grip. In Q3 I was standing crosswise in the fast first turn and was pretty shocked. In Q4 I wasn’t sure if I’d make it. That makes it even nicer to be in front now.”

Tom Kristensen’s exclusive Le Mans Countdown – Part 12

Ingolstadt, May 22, 2010 – In a weekly column Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen gives some exclusive insights behind the scenes of the world’s most famous endurance race and the preparation by Audi Sport Team Joest.

“Just two more weeks and I’ll have to pack my suitcases for Le Mans. The race of the year is coming closer with giant steps.

I clearly remember my first Le Mans race in 1997. At that time, I received a call from Ralf Jüttner just a few days before the event. I neither knew the car nor the track, so I started to explore it jogging around it after my arrival. Nevertheless, I won right away togehter with Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson. That was the beginning of my great love of Le Mans. Since then, I’ve won the race eight times and will be contesting this unique event for as much as the 14th time this year.

Ride along with the Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS at the 24 hours of the Nürburgring

Ride along with Frank Stippler as he pilots the #98 Phoenix Racing Audi R8 LMS during the 2010 Nürburgring 24 Hours Race. While the R8 LMS didn’t finish the race it definitely shows how potent of a race car it is during this ride along. It is very interesting to see just how much traffic there is to deal with! It reminds me of my morning commute! Enjoy….

Phoenix Racing’s Audi R8 LMS takes 3rd overall and 1st in class at 24 hours of Nürburgring

  • Phoenix Racing wins the GT3 class in the 24h race
  • No luck during the race in fight for overall victory
  • Only two of the seven Audi R8 LMS on the grid make the finish

Ingolstadt/Nürburg, May 16, 2010 – The Audi R8 LMS remains as best in class in the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife: Also during its second outing in the “green hell”, the world’s longest and toughest race track, the mid-engine sportscar crossed the finish line as winner of the GT3 class (SP9).

With third place overall in Phoenix Racing’s Audi LMS R8 Marc Bronzel (Siek), Luca Ludwig (Roisdorf), Dennis Rostek (Porta Westfalica) and Markus Winkelhock (Berglen) presented the team with an unexpected surprise since this quartet did not even number among the favorites before the race started. The conservative and mechanically easy going driving style of the Phoenix squad, however, paid dividends: The Audi R8 LMS with start number 97 ran – apart from a small electronical problem during the opening stages – with the smallest technical problem.
