Ingolstadt, April 30, 2010 – In a weekly column Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen gives some exclusive insights behind the scenes of the world’s most famous endurance race and the preparation by Audi Sport Team Joest.
“The Le Mans 24 Hours have been held since 1923. And over the years the question of which car can cover the longest distance in 24 hours has made Le Mans develop into one of the world’s biggest sporting events that keeps attracting increasingly large crowds.
Over 230,000 fans flock to Le Mans every year. Traditionally, they’ve included a particularly large number of Brits, fans from the Benelux countries and Frenchmen. But Denmark has been represented with a large turnout that’s out of proportion for the size of the country for some years as well. This time, more than 25,000 of my fellow countrymen are expected at Le Mans! That’s incredible for a small country like ours. My team-mates keep joking that Denmark must be pretty empty in mid-June …
Robert Downey Jr. and R8 Spyder rely on Vorsprung durch Technik
Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet
INGOLSTADT, Germany, Apr 28, 2010 – Robert Downey Jr. has returned to his role as the ingenious engineer and Super Hero Iron Man. The world premiere of Iron Man 2 took place on Monday in Los Angeles. Along with Robert Downey Jr., several other big names accompanied director Jon Favreau down the red carpet, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson – and right in the centre of things, the Audi R8 Spyder. Robert Downey Jr. arrived for the premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in the supercar. It was a scene straight out of the Marvel Studios movie, in which main character Tony Stark drives the open-top two-seater. Continue reading ‘Iron Man 2 drives an Audi R8 Spyder’
The scene was set for the number 01 Audi S4 from APR Motorsport to make podium after their start from P10. The car was running only .8 seconds behind the leading fastest lap times in their class and was keeping pace throughout the race. Ian Baas piloted the S4 brilliantly and was able to move it up all the way to P2 thanks for some great passing and a smart pit strategy from Jeff Mishtawy, Director of Motorsports for APR. Fifth-placed Mike Rockenfeller is best Audi driver
Martin Tomczyk and Alexandre Prémat suffer punctures
Mattias Ekström in the points despite team error
Ingolstadt/Hockenheim, April 25, 2010 – The 2010 DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring did not go according to plan for title defender Audi: several punctures and a tactical error deprived the brand from Ingolstadt of a possible victory. In the end, Audi had to settle for places five to eight after three consecutive triumphs.
78,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) witnessed a turbulent start into the season that saw the first laps in particular being marked by extremely tough battles for positions and at which, in the end, the tires played a crucial part. Ian Baas qualified the number 01 Audi S4 from APR Motorsport in 10th place less than a second behind the pole sitter (Jack Roush Jr. in a Roush Mustang). This is going to be a close, tight race and the S4 is poised to make a run for a podium finish. The S4 uses a lot less tire than the more powerful mustangs and if a few things fall their way, APR should be looking at their first podium of the year. To make things even more exciting there is a 60% chance of rain!!! Pray for rain! If it does rain at all the Audi will obviously have a distinct advantage and will be well positioned for a win or podium finish. Stay tuned for updates. Follow on Facebook and Twitter for the most up to date information LIVE from the race which starts tomorrow at 3:30PM ET.
Allan Mcnish has just published a great blog post on his website reflecting on the 8 hour race at Paul Ricard and the first win for the R15 Plus. I love hearing from the drivers directly and this gives us even more reason to get excited for Le Mans! Enjoy the read…
Well the first race is over and I don’t think anyone at Audi Sport could have hoped for a better result at Paul Ricard. Giving the R15 Plus its first victory follows in the same vane as with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI – Audi’s fine tradition of scoring a début race win first time out with its latest sportscar.
Winning at Ricard was a positive surprise. Before arriving at Le Castellet, Dindo and I had effectively done one day of dry weather testing. So we were very early in our learning process. It was important from the drivers’ point of view to get on with the job and for us and the team to start on a good and firm footing. Ingolstadt, April 23, 2010 – Right in time for the start of the new season Audi puts the DTM and all other racing series in which the brand with the four rings is active on the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the new iPad: the “Audi Sport” App is now available for downloading from the App Store – free of charge of course.
The new application offers the latest news, results, point standings, photos, sound bites, videos and background information on Audi AG’s extensive motorsport commitment.
The reports cover the DTM, the Le Mans project and the GT3 customer sport program. The Audi A4 DTM, the R15 TDI diesel race sports car and the Audi R8 LMS are presented in detail as well as all Audi drivers and Audi “factory” teams. A live ticker keeps users up to speed on all major racing commitments.
The App offers media representatives a dedicated service area from which TV footage may be ordered, for example.
During the next few months the App will be progressively extended and enhanced by additional features.
Ingolstadt, April 23, 2010 – In a weekly column Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen gives some exclusive insights behind the scenes of the world’s most famous endurance race and the preparation by Audi Sport Team Joest. “During the 30-hour test at Le Castellet this week we had the opportunity of driving plenty of miles in the Audi R15 plus. So this is a good point in time to explain the cockpit of our diesel race sports car to you.
You can’t compare the cockpit of an LMP1 with a road car in any respect. Even a genuine sports car like the Audi R8 LMS offers a lot more comfort than the R15 plus does. It is a thorough-bred race car that is totally designed for speed and efficiency and has a very direct power-assisted steering ratio.
