What is it that has kept the Audi A8 for North America in the deep, dark shadows cast by the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Cass? The recently discontinued ‘D3’ A8 in 2004, in its best year in the U.S., sold a pretty respectable 5,943 units. Well, 2009 was very hard on this luxury segment, and total D3 sales amounted to just 1,463 in the United States. (continue reading…)
“The next über-model from Audi’s Quattro GmbH division won’t officially debut in Geneva for another week, but images from its brochure have already made their way onto the web. The Audi RS5 coupe will no doubt take the performance of Audi’s B8 platform to levels beyond the much-loved and departed RS4. What we don’t know at this point is how high that level will go, and what the motive power will be.
It’s probably safe to assume it’ll fall somewhere between the 420 horsepower of the Audi RS4 and the 571 hp of the current Audi RS6. Snowy skies cleared up quickly enough, but whiteout conditions still prevailed at the Audi display: virtually the entire model lineup clad in Ibis White. Three notable exceptions were an R8, R8 Spyder, and A5 Cabriolet painted a sun-tanned Ipanema Brown (the prettiest color you’ll never want to own).
With no premieres or major announcements scheduled at the typically low-key show, Audi gave star billing to the all-new 2011 A8. The silver example (the only other color exception) served notice to BMW and Mercedes that Audi is angling to take leadership of the executive, or D segment, as it is known. As irony would have it, at the very next stand BMW was strutting out the newest iteration of its standard bearer, the Alpina B7. Continue reading ‘Whiteout! Audi at the Chicago Auto Show’

Six of jailed money manager Trevor Cook’s cars, which will be up for auction Saturday in downtown Minneapolis, surrounded Matt Rabanus of Classic Auto Storage. Most are high-mileage, relatively low-value cars. But the one in the front right is the real prize of the bunch, a highly modified Audi screamer that Cook bought from a financial expert in Switzerland. It’s expected to fetch more than $30,000.
