Petit Le Mans: Audi R15 on podium but race is called as rain prevails

Petit Le Mans 2009 is in the books. The race has been officially called and the checked flag has waived. This anti-clamatic finish comes after many hours of waiting under red flag conditions. Drivers have been out of their cars for many hours waiting for the rain to lighten enough for standing water and track flooding to cease. Peugeot takes 1st and 2nd place in the number 08 and 07 cars. The two Audi R15s finish a dissapointing 3rd and 4th place. Allan McNish was in the lead only minutes before the Red Flag, but spun due to water on the racetrack. The Audi team and fans are certainly disappointed as this spin made the difference in Audi taking home the top podium spot. More to come as official results are posted and Audi posts their press releases!

Official Results
1 #08 Sarrazin/Montagny Peugeot 908 HDI FAP
2 #07 Minassian/Lamy Peugeot 908 HDI FAP
3 #2 Allan McNish Audi R15 TDI
4 #1 Marco Werner Audi R15 TDI

Rain at Petit Le Mans gives Audi an early edge

Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish have piloted the #2 Audi R15 into first place, just 11 seconds ahead of the #7 Peugeot 908 HDI FAP currently piloted by Nicolas Minassian. Lucas Lurh and Marco Werner in the #1 Audi R15 are currently one lap behind the leader holding strong in 3rd place. However the rain has stopped and the track is drying. The Peugeots are gaining an advantage as a result. Tune into SpeedTV for live coverage or visit http://www.americanlemans.com/ for live scoring and updates!

Update:
Approximately 2hours and 30minutes left in the race and the course is under Red Flag conditions meaning cars are stopped and drivers are out of the cars waiting for the rain to let up. McNish had the lead a few minutes prior to the Red flag (under full course yellow) and lost the lead by spinning in the rain. (Editor’s Note: Race is expected to restart at 7:30PM EST)

Current Running Order:
1 08 P1 Franck Montagny Peugeot 908 HDI FAP
2 07 P1 Pedro Lamy Peugeot 908 HDI FAP
3 2 P1 Allan McNish Audi R15 TDI
4 1 P1 Marco Werner Audi R15 TDI

Audi reveals the purely electric e-tron

- The highly anticipated Audi concept showcases the performance sports car capabilities of electric vehicle technology
- Utilizing four motors, e-tron produces 313 hp and 3,319 lb-ft of torque
- The electric vehicle study incorporates a range of novel approaches

INGOLSTADT/FRANKFURT, Germany, Sep 15, 2009

Audi presents the highlight of the IAA 2009: the e-tron, a high-performance sports car with a purely electric drive system. Four motors – two each at the front and rear axles – drive the wheels, making the concept car a true quattro. Producing 230 kW (313 hp) and 4,500 Nm (3,319.03 lb-ft) of torque, the two-seater accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 4.8 seconds, and from 60 to 120 km/h (37.28 – 74.56 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The lithium-ion battery provides a truly useable energy content of 42.4 kilowatt hours to enable a range of approximately 248 kilometers, or 154 miles.

The performance figures are by no means the only evidence of the consistent and holistic strategy. The design makes it clear that the e-tron belongs in the major leagues of sports cars, and the package takes into account the specific realities of an electric vehicle. The battery is directly behind the passenger cabin for an optimal center of gravity and axle load distribution.

The e-tron is able to freely distribute the powerful torque of its four electric motors to the wheels as required. This torque vectoring allows for dazzling dynamics and an undreamed-of level of agility and precision when cornering.
